Abast

Language for all kinds of communications

Definitions

Non-sexist language: By non-sexist language we mean the use of both genders to refer to both sexes, avoiding privileging, in general, the masculine to refer to both, and excluding the other (still that this exclusion is, as in most cases, involuntary). Non-sexist use of language is part of what is called inclusive, inclusive or integrative language.

Development

Respectful and non-discriminatory language must be used in any communication action that is launched. The papers will use easy and engaging language, with the possibility of including international pictograms to make it understandable for both people with intellectual disabilities and people from other cultures. Explicit Discrimination: In reference to specific people, the appropriate gender, male or female, should always be used. In the case of indefinite persons, alternative forms to the masculine (singular or plural) should be used: Implicit discrimination: This type of discrimination is very visible when associating certain professions or positions with a gender, as they have historically been developed by mostly men or women.

To get a neutral language:

Use of generics: There are both masculine and feminine terms in our languages that refer to both sexes. We will prioritize its use in both forms. Competitors – Competition Workers – People Friends – Friendships Consumers – Consumption Director – Management Shareholders – Shareholders Citizens – Citizenship Use of abstract names: Lots of guests – Lots of guests The Americans – The American Population / American Citizenship Workers – Working people We all know – It’s well known How Many Know – How Many People Know To highlight both genres: In order to avoid excluding one of the two genders (the feminine in general) and in the absence or stylistic impossibility of using generics, it is necessary to cite both genders. In articles and nouns: Workers – ‘Workers’ or ‘Workers’. Only in articles Journalists – Journalists. Use of bars It is a resource to be avoided, as there are generic terms and cuts the reading, but if there is no other possibility, it is useful in some specific cases, for example when there is a lack of space, in a list of charges, etc. Director, operator, secretary … (in many of them the generic can also be used: address, prefecture …)

Commitments related to non-sexist communication

Review and correct the company’s internal documentation to ensure that no sexist or discriminatory language is used. Although it may seem insignificant, it is clear that language objectifies thought and conditions reality.

Do not use stereotypical images of women in the advertising of the company or its products. This measure aims to break with a degrading image of women that does not correspond to reality.

Avoid differentiated treatment based on gender Some companies target men by last name and women by first name. This measure aims to prevent the work done by women in the company from being discredited or made invisible.

Ensure that work clothes are neutral Prevent women from wearing “feminine” clothing out of obligation (e.g., skirts) or vice versa (e.g., banning skirts). This measure aims for both men and women to dress freely and without gender conditioning.
